In the past decade, the automobile industry has experienced a revolution. While traditional vehicles are still going strong, the creation of affordable, mass-produced hybrids and electric cars has started a revolution.

Long Island has fewer public chargers than other areas in the state, one of the key barriers to increasing electric vehicle ownership, according to a 2019 report from the nonprofit Drive Electric Long Island Coalition.

More and more Long Island communities are warming up to alternative transportation, from on-demand minibuses in Nassau to a bike-share program introduced in three Suffolk communities, experts said.
